Do not engine-break
« on: May 31, 2010, 04:10:14 AM »
About a year ago, with a total of about 1,000 miles of motorcycle riding experience, I had my first crash which resulted in a minor bike injury and major wrist injury involving repair by an orthopedic surgeon. Here are some of the main points:

Date: June 7, 2009, a.m.

Motorcycle: 2008 Honda 230L

Speed: 25 mph

Location: Residential street where I live

Distraction: Vehicle backing out of drive, 100 yards ahead

Object not planned for: metal storm drain, 20 yards ahead, like this one, crossing the road

Driver error: slowing by down-shifting, watching driver backing out, forgetting the diminished traction of the storm drain immediately in front of me

Result, motorcycle: Sudden locking of rear wheel on the grate, engine stall, and motorcycle going from 25 mph to 0 mph on the other side of the metal drain, broken left turn signal, very slightly bent handle bar (handle bar did not have to be repaired or replaced), slightly bent brake lever, other small broken parts

Result, human: maintained speed over handle bars, right wrist breaking between brake lever and handle bar, landing helmet-first at left-front side of motorcycle

Result, left boot: leather removed from left toe (but steel toe kept driver toenails intact)

Cost to repair motorcycle: $260.00

Cost to repair human: $5,500

Mitigating circumstances: I was wearing ATG -- boots, overpants (mesh), jacket (mesh), helmet (full face)

Primary lesson learned: I no longer engine-break

Secondary lesson learned: Orthopedic surgeons are underpaid; mine supplemented his income with plastic surgery.

And yes, I started riding again, about 5 months after the accident. I did not replace the break lever, leaving it bent slightly outward, as a memento.
